Five-Day Devotional: Communion – The Gift of God

Day 1: Humility in Service

Scripture: John 13:1–5
Reflection:
Jesus demonstrated extraordinary humility by washing His disciples’ feet—a task typically reserved for servants. This act points to His selfless love and sets an example for how we should serve one another. Foot washing also symbolizes spiritual cleansing, reminding us that Jesus’ sacrifice cleanses us from sin.

Takeaway:
How can you serve others with humility this week? Reflect on ways to demonstrate Christlike love through your actions.

Day 2: The Need for Cleansing

Scripture: John 13:6–11
Reflection:
Peter struggled to understand why Jesus, his Master, would wash his feet. Jesus explained the importance of being spiritually cleansed to maintain fellowship with Him. While salvation is a one-time event, ongoing repentance and communion with Christ keep our relationship with Him vibrant and unhindered.

Takeaway:
Is there anything hindering your communion with Christ? Take time to identify and address any barriers, renewing your fellowship with Him.

Day 3: Communion with One Another

Scripture: John 13:12–17
Reflection:
After washing their feet, Jesus instructed His disciples to follow His example by serving one another. Communion isn’t just vertical (with God) but also horizontal (with others). True fellowship with the church involves love, forgiveness, and humility.

Takeaway:
How can you practice love and forgiveness in your relationships within the church? Consider reaching out to someone in need of encouragement or reconciliation.

Day 4: The Blood of the Covenant

Scripture: Mark 14:22–25
Reflection:
At the Last Supper, Jesus used bread and wine to symbolize His body and blood, foreshadowing His sacrifice on the cross. His blood, shed for many, established a new covenant—one of grace, forgiveness, and eternal life for all who believe in Him.

Takeaway:
Reflect on the power of Jesus’ blood. It cleanses, redeems, and gives us access to the Father. Spend time meditating on the significance of this gift.

Day 5: Communion with Christ Begins at the Cross and Looks to Eternity

Scripture: Mark 14:22–24; 1 Corinthians 11:23–26
Reflection:
Communion calls us to remember the cross, where Jesus bore our sins and made a way for us to be reconciled with God. His sacrifice is sufficient—our salvation rests in His finished work, not in our own efforts. But communion also looks forward with hope. As Jesus told His disciples, “For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.” (1 Corinthians 11:26). When we partake in communion, we proclaim His death and look ahead to the day when He returns to make all things new.

Takeaway:
How does the promise of Christ’s return shape the way you live today? Let the hope of eternity inspire you to live with joy, faithfulness, and gratitude.
