5-Day Devotional: The Everlasting Father – Jesus’ Fatherly Attributes
Day 1: Jesus, the Everlasting Father
Scripture: Isaiah 9:6 (KJV)
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
In this powerful prophecy, Jesus is called the Everlasting Father, though He is distinct from the Father. This title speaks of the eternal nature of Jesus, as He shares in the divine essence of the Father, and demonstrates His role in caring for His people in a fatherly way. Jesus’ eternal nature assures us that He is always present, always loving, and always guiding His children. Jesus, the Everlasting Father, is a refuge for us, a constant source of love and security.
Reflection:
How does the truth of Jesus being the Everlasting Father provide you with assurance today?
Think about how this eternal love and care shape your relationship with Him.
Day 2: Jesus as the Provider
Scripture: John 6:35 (KJV)
“And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.”
As a good Father, Jesus provides for our deepest needs, both physical and spiritual. He is the Bread of Life, offering sustenance that satisfies far beyond what the world can offer. This provision is not temporary but eternal, feeding our souls and giving us life. The Fatherly provision of Jesus assures us that, as His children, we will always have what we need to grow and thrive in Him.
Reflection:
In what areas of your life do you need to trust Jesus more fully for His provision?
How does Jesus, as the Bread of Life, meet your needs spiritually?
Day 3: Jesus as Protector
Scripture: John 10:28-30 (KJV)
“And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand. I and my Father are one.”
Jesus, the Everlasting Father, offers us eternal security. He is our protector, holding us in His hand, and nothing can take us away from His love. His protection isn’t just for today; it is eternal. We are safe in His presence, secured in the promises He makes to us as His children. The bond we have with Christ is unbreakable, for He and the Father are one.
Reflection:
How can we exhibit this behavior with those around us?
In what ways can you respond to His protection in your daily life?
Day 4: Jesus as the Sacrificial Father
Scripture: John 3:14-15 (KJV)
“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.”
In this passage, Jesus refers to an event from Israel’s history in which Moses lifted up a bronze serpent to heal those who were bitten by snakes (Numbers 21:4-9). Jesus likens His being “lifted up” on the cross to this act. Just as the Israelites looked to the serpent for healing, we are called to look to Jesus, who was lifted up for our salvation. His death on the cross provides the way for eternal life to all who believe in Him.
Reflection:
How does the image of Jesus being “lifted up” speak to the way we look to Him for salvation?
In what ways can you share the message of Jesus’ sacrifice with others, helping them look to Him for eternal life?
Day 5: Jesus, Our Compassionate Father
Scripture: Matthew 9:36 (KJV)
“But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.”
In His earthly ministry, Jesus was moved with compassion for those who were lost and hurting. As the Everlasting Father, He looks upon His children with the same deep care and sympathy. His heart aches for those who are scattered, lost, or without direction. This compassion calls us to rely on Him for guidance, knowing He understands our deepest needs.
Reflection:
In what areas of your life do you need the compassion of the Everlasting Father?
How can you reflect the compassion of Jesus to others who are struggling?
Closing Thoughts:
As you reflect on the Everlasting Father, Jesus, this week, remember that He is eternal, providing, protecting, sacrificial, and compassionate toward His children. Whether you feel alone, in need, or uncertain, know that Jesus, your Everlasting Father, is always present with a father’s love. Turn to Him for everything you need, trusting that He will never fail you.
